Fall Semester

Created as a collaborative visual merchandising project at Ball State University, this back-to-school display reimagines the traditional fall retail environment by blending vintage fashion, music culture, and vibrant seasonal styling. Rather than relying on muted autumn palettes, the concept embraces bold oranges, deep purples, and layered textures to create an energetic atmosphere that reflects the excitement of a new school year while appealing to high school and college-aged consumers. The display was inspired by the idea that music shapes identity and personal style, recognizing that many individuals use fashion to express the artists, genres, and cultural movements that resonate with them.

The central ensemble was intentionally styled with a late 1960s and early 1970s-inspired silhouette, featuring velvet bell-bottoms, a distressed graphic baby tee, a structured velvet blazer, platform clogs, and minimal accessories to create visual cohesion through texture, color, and proportion. While rooted in vintage influences, contemporary references modernize the look and make it relatable to today’s consumer. The surrounding environment reinforces this narrative through carefully selected props, including vinyl records, a retro record player, a portable radio, vintage denim, music memorabilia, and layered textiles that evoke nostalgia while celebrating the enduring relationship between music and fashion.

Design elements and principles played a critical role in the display’s execution. Color, texture, line, shape, and space were strategically combined to establish rhythm and visual interest, while balance, harmony, contrast, emphasis, and proportion guided the viewer’s eye throughout the composition. Interactive elements, such as the full-length mirror, enhanced the customer experience by creating depth and encouraging personal engagement with the display. Every styling decision and environmental detail was intentionally curated to support a unified visual story that connects fashion, culture, and retail design.

Ultimately, the project demonstrates how visual merchandising can transform a seasonal display into an immersive storytelling experience. By merging historical inspiration with contemporary consumer insights, the display celebrates individuality, nostalgia, and creative expression while illustrating the power of thoughtful merchandising to communicate brand identity and foster meaningful connections with customers.
